FAQ

What is a virtual run?
A race that has no set location or time. You do the 5k on your terms: wherever you want, however quickly you want, whenever you want within the window.

How will I get my medal?
Once the race window has closed, we will mail each participant their keepsake. We’re hoping you’ll upload a picture of you on the 5k, or a screenshot of your path, etc–but it’s not mandatory. Either way, we’ll send your keepsake to the mailing address listed on your paypal donation at the end of the year.

Can I compete if I’m not in the United States?
Of course!! Anyone in the world, anywhere, can participate.

Why are you having a 5k at all?
The Makris Family was anxiously awaiting the arrival of their new baby boy, Tucker. On August 19, 2015, Rebecca was admitted to the hospital with severe contractions. Several heartbreaking hours later, the Makris Family had to say goodbye to their sweet baby boy due to a placental abruption. At almost 29 weeks’ gestation, Tucker weighed 3 lbs 4 oz and was 15.5 inches long.

Tucker spent several hours in the loving embrace of his family. Rebecca, always a fighter and an unfailingly positive person, immediately began pumping her breastmilk to donate to other babies in need. Now it’s our turn to fight and give back. She’s a runner and an athlete, so we are honoring the memory of her son with a virtual 5k.

Where is all this money going, anyway?
The Makris Family would like to raise as much as they can to purchase a CuddleCot in Tucker’s honor for the hospital where he was born, Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara Medical Center. A CuddleCot is a cooling bassinet that allows bereaved parents to have more time with an infant who has passed away in Labor & Delivery. Learn more about them here.

Additionally, we do have some administration costs: namely the manufacturing and shipping of participants’ medals. The design, staffing, and shipping materials have all been donated. If we raise more than $3000, we hope to buy more CuddleCots for other hospitals.

Why is the money going into a person’s paypal?
The money will go directly from this paypal account to the CuddleCot Initiative as soon as the race window has ended. Watch this website and our facebook page for a posting of Tucker’s donated CuddleCot soon after.
